Vassar College is a school that is dedicated to the beauty of art and life. The school has a rich past of supporting the arts, which it strives to keep up today. Through the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College continues to be a leader in the world of art. The impressive collection within helps to teach not just art students, but also the entire campus.
The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center Vassar College has a history going back to the 19th century. Mathew Vassar started this collection by donating famous paintings of the Hudson River School. It was founded with the intention of teaching students about art from actual art. Although this makes perfect sense today, Vassar College was in fact the first to do this. Making use of all of the paintings, pottery, and prints, has long been a tradition at the college. The building itself is often thought of as a work of art. The campus grounds are in a way an extension of the museum. There is of course the sculpture garden but also the campus is surrounded by beauty.
The idea of teaching students through experiences over books is a radical idea. What better way is there though than to learn about brush strokes than by physically seeing them? Only seeing things like a sculpture in a book or on a slide does not do the piece any justice. The students at Vassar College that can take advantage of these experiences have a step up on the average art student. The sheer scale of many objects is the impression that many people first walk away with. A huge sculpture in a book loses some of its presence. It also loses some of its appreciation. One really needs to see something to fully appreciate just how much effort has gone into something.
There is value to collections to more than just the students of art. The whole campus is enriched by it. The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center boasts an impressive collection now to rival any museum. All Vassar College students can make use of the collection. Because all aspects of life involve art, all students can find value in the collections. Students of foreign language and culture can see many significant pieces within the collections. Also students of film and drama can seek inspiration through the collection. An exotic painting or even that of a simple farm may inspire a great play. Even students of science may find usefulness in the collections botany or architectural art collections. This of course is the beauty of art. It has a way of touching all people.
